(SÔ-MA) Soma is an intoxicating drink used in ancient rituals for healing, spirituality, mind expansion, and the raising and understanding of consciousness and awareness.
The band SÔMA is a four-piece hard rock/metal band from Long Island, New York. With melodic vocals, catchy choruses, inventive guitar lines, and clever musical arrangements, the music sweeps from the heavy melodic to the mellow hypnotic. Also incorporated into their music is the use of odd time signatures which help to create a different kind of texture.
The music of Soma evolves out of self reflection and is made evident in title track and first single of the CD which is called 'Living An Experiment'. Touching on themes about consciousness, mind expansion, anti-establishment, and engaging the mystery of the mind, amongst other ideas, SOMA exists in a space that lies “outside of the box” from the music right down to the lyrical content. The end result is a movement which is powerful and unique.
Formed in late 2006, the band consists of vocalist Greg Golembiowski, guitarist Josh Cattell, bassist Dave Powers and drummer/percussionist Mike Murphy. Vocalist Greg Golembiowski previously shared the stage and played shows with Danny Carey (drummer for TOOL) with his solo project Pygmy Love Circus, Vince Neil (of Motley Crue), Motograter (whose singer now sings for Five Finger Death Punch), Bloodsimple, Otep and many other international recording artists. Guitarist Josh Cattell and bassist Dave Powers are both self-taught adding an important original quality to the music. Drummer Mike Murphy’s creativity is evident not only in his beats and rhythms but also in the visual graphic element of SOMA as Mike designs all of the graphics for the CD’s and promotional materials.
'Living An Experiment' was recorded at The Cutting Room in New York City in the heart of Greenwich Village. The CD was recorded by Platinum award winning and Grammy nominated engineer Anthony “Rocky” Gallo. Anthony’s credits include Seether, Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party, John Legend, The Killers, Shinedown, Mos Def, Death Row, Jakob Dylan and numerous other recording artists. The CD was self produced and was mastered by Tony Gillis. During the recording of 'Living An Experiment' Anthony was so impressed by SOMA and their material that he told the band that he’d love to produce them and work with the band going forward of which the band was elated considering Anthony’s credentials.
With the release of Soma’s new CD 'Living An Experiment', the band is hard at work playing, writing, promoting, and winning over fans.
